Boys Varsity Football
BRONX, NY- On what would be a historically cold Thanksgiving Day, I came alongside my dad to watch the Cardinals play our archrivals Mount Saint Michael in the 76th annual Turkey Bowl.
The Turkey Bowl holds a special place in many Hayes alumni.
Hayesmen from the past and certainly from the present all gathered to witness this special football game that for the first time in recent memory was held at Cardinal Spellman H.S.
Let me tell you something:
We came to play.
With Hayes coming off a 29-18 loss in the CHSAA “AAA” finals, this 2018 team gave it their all. The “scrappy” Cardinals team showed us why they are a force to be reckoned with even after a tough loss against Archbishop Stepinac.
In this annual matchup, Hayes dominated in the first half simply outclassing Mount St. Michael.
Hayes had a strong lead going into the second half. At one point during to game, Hayes had led 46-12 before the scoreboard had been turned off. It seems this is becoming an annual tradition of “pulling the plug” of the scoreboard.
As always playing the game with the utmost respect, Hayes would then sub out the first team giving other players a shot to play in this annual game.
Hayes would then proceed to win 46-24.
It’s amazing to think how at one point, Hayes would lose to the Mount every single year.
Like what the former principal and biggest Hayes’ supporter, Msgr. Pavis once said, “ Beat the Mount cause the rest don’t count!”
I would like to thank the Hayes’ varsity football team for a great season and amazing playoff run.
Now it is basketball season time.
