NEW ROCHELLE – In sports, numbers don’t lie.

Inside the Tully gymnasium, I stared at the scoreboard at the conclusion of the first half of this highly anticipated matchup against Iona Prep and I was quite surprised at the halftime score.

Are you’re ready?  Remember, this isn’t the first quarter. The score was 17-15.

I know you’re saying if the Cardinals (11-2, 9-2) totally dominated the Gaels (7-5, 5-3), exactly where was the dominance?

Throughout the first half, both teams shot poorly and the Cardinals’ field-goal percentage was a dismal 33 percent.

But, suddenly things changed. In the second half of this particular regular-season game it wasn't about their talented senior point guard Joe Toussaint. Surprisingly, he only had six points throughout the entire game.

Numbers don’t lie and in the second half, the Cardinals underclassmen dominated and their field-goal percentage was 52 percent.

Let’s talk about that ole’ “alley-opp” play and how the Hayes guards love to feed Shemani Fuller ‘20 who dropped 8 points in the game. This 6’ 7” center has been a nice compliment to this team and looks to have a promising 2018-2019 season.

Or how about the combined nine 3-pointers the Cardinals dropped in this lopsided win? Furthermore, this win was about seeing how the underclassman (Julien Sourmaro - 16 points, Jaylen Murray - 15 points, Byran Adams - 7 points) performed and provided much of the offense throughout the second half.

With 2:53 minutes left in the final quarter and Iona already facing a 26-point deficit, it was already a done deal and Hayes would leave Westchester County in first place.

With their 11th win of the season, Hayes is sitting rather comfortably in the CHSAA “AA” division and if you’re Coach Lods you’re only saying this: “ game at a time.”
