BRONX - On Friday night, Hayes basketball was in full effect.
On a rainy, dark night, the undefeated Cardinals (6-0, 5-0) looked towards adding another victory under their belt against a decent Iona Prep (3-2, 3-1) team.
The matchup against their Westchester County rivals started out rough for the Cardinals. Iona Prep came to compete by taking a 10-4 lead. After this early dominant play, Iona would then take a 15-8 lead to end the quarter.
However, this early deficit would be a blessing in disguise.
The second quarter would showcase a “hard nose” defensive Cardinals’ team.
Under the defensive anchor of Adam Cisse ‘19 and surprisingly shot blocking guard Jaylen Murray ‘21, Hayes would only allow seven points in the second quarter.
The Hayes’ offense also stepped up big and gave the Cardinals a 24-22 lead to end the half.
Would this be a close game to somehow upset the undefeated Cardinals? Not at all.
The third quarter truly showed this Bronx team why the Cardinals should be considered the favorites to win it all in 2018-2019.
The overall team defense and offense led by a fifteen point Jaylen Murray quarter would propel Hayes towards a solid lead.
Iowa commit Joe Toussaint ‘19 and playmaker Jaylen Smith ‘20 would also step up to give the Cardinals a 43-37 lead.
Another factor that led to the Cardinals’ success was the rebounding by Shrani Fuller ‘20 and Adam Cisse ‘19. Hayes would continue to put the pressure on Iona giving this talented ballclub a good lead to close the game.
Hayes would win 56-43 and continue their unbelievable winning streak.
